Local Artist and ex-client Supporting Covenant House

Local artist Jan Vincent Sam launched his website to showcase a unique series of portraits last week, he couldn't have imagined the immediate response a handful of Facebook postings would lead to. "It's been great," says the new and emerging versatile artist of the viral buzz his website has already generated, "all my friends have been very supportive by sharing the link, it seems like a lot of people are starting to hear about it."

The website features examples of Sam’s unique and interpretive digital-style portraits which are hand drawn and rendered utilizing computer software, as well as his one of a kind originals. The public will be able to submit photographs of themselves online from which Sam will create his own high spirited, multi layered hand drawn digital versions. The final product will result in a reasonably priced $100 12×16 print ready to be framed and displayed in your own home gallery.

“Launching this website has given me a unique opportunity not only to showcase and create these drawings,” Jan says, “but also to give back to the community; Covenant House in particular. They were there for me when I was struggling and I feel privileged to be able to help support them now in my own small way.”

Sam, who will donate a portion of his digital portrait proceeds to Covenant House Vancouver, is also a musician & songwriter and has experienced a number of soul searching events since moving to Vancouver from Kelowna, B.C. in 2003. He lived on the streets as a busker, challenged himself spiritually, and came to terms with his First Nations heritage, all the while drawing people’s faces with sketch pad in hand.

Hats off to the Tyee

The Tyee is a Vancouver based blog that consistently reports on issues relating to homelessness, drawing much-needed attention to an issue that concerns most British Columbians.

Click here for today's article on a renovated SRO.  Thanks to Monte Paulsen for covering this topic near and dear to us.

New Ad Campaign launched

As Covenant House is privately funded, we rely on a small, but effective radio advertising campaign each year to gain public support.  We raise about 50% of our entire annual revenue in November and December so we focus our radio campaign during these months.

Tune into ROCK 101, CKNW, Virgin and QMFM in Vancouver to catch our new ad or click here to listen.

We love it when they get back in touch

Today I answered a phone call from a young woman who was looking to speak to our program staff. She was working on organizing a series of speakers to talk about resources for at risk and street youth to youth in her community.

She mentioned that she used to stay with us here at Covenant House and that we had really helped her out and that she wanted others to know about the good things we do! What a nice surprise call!

Night of New Beginnings for Covenant House

TD Waterhouse Private Investment Advice to host Gala for second year

This gala event will kick-off or "30 days for 30 nights" campaign which aims to raise enough money to cover the cost of running our shelter for the entire month of December; this year's goal is $279,000.

You will enjoy cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, amazing silent and live auction items and fabulous raffle prizes. Last year this event raised over $80,000 to help cover the day-to-day operations of our 54 bed crisis shelter for our busiest month of the year.

Please join etalk Daily and laineygossip.com's Elaine Lui, Master of Ceremonies, on November 26, 2009 from 5:00-8:00pm at Birks Vancouver. You can truly make a difference in the lives of homeless youth.

Contact Shelley Holmes at 604-482-5131, or Shelley.Holmes@td.com for tickets.

Tickets are $75.00 each.

To explore sponsorship opportunities or to donate an auction item, please contact Adil H. Chagani at 604-482-2425, or Adil.Chagani@td.com.

Home for the Games Gaining Momentum

Click here for todays' Vancouver Courier article.

Opening up your home to a stranger may seem like a "strange" thing to do but the thought of meeting someone new, perhaps from a far destination, is appealing to me.  I love where I live and am proud of being not only a North Vancouverite but a Canadian; that Covenant House will benefit from my experience is an added bonus.

If you are interested in providing a room or your entire home to a visitor during the upcoming 2010 Olympics, and supporting Covenant House at the same time, please visit Home for the Games.
