Prostitution and Women’s Equality-Imagining More for Women

The sexual exploitation of girls and women in the commercial sex trade is a human rights crisis and a direct hindrance to women's equality. Some argue that prostitution is a harmless commercial transaction between consenting adults. We refute this. Prostitution is violence against women. It is driven by the male demand for sexual access to the bodies of women and children and must be treated as a form of gendered and often racialized violence. Prostitution cannot be made safe through decriminalization and regulation. Join us as we host Gunilla Ekberg, Swedish-Canadian lawyer and expert on the international human rights of women and girls, presenting on the Nordic Model of law and policy- an alternative to complete decriminalization that enshrines the dignity of women and addresses the male demand for paid sex. We will also be hosting guest panellists from our community.
