Hockey Helps the Homeless – Giving Back to the Community

On June 8th Covenant House Vancouver was honoured to receive $10,000 from Hockey Helps the Homeless. This incredible gift represents funds from their 2011 tournament which raised a total of $110,000 for outreach associations in the downtown eastside. Covenant House will use this gift to offer sports and recreation programs for our young people. In addition to being great exercise, giving our youth the opportunity to participate in this type of program also teaches social skills, teamwork and leadership, as well as building self-esteem.

Hockey Helps the Homeless is a volunteer-driven national fundraising organization that partners with NHL alumni and the local community to organize annual single-day fantasy hockey tournaments sponsored by regional and national corporations.  Net proceeds benefit local homeless outreach organizations in an effort to help end homelessness in communities across Canada.

Vancouver will host its 2012 Hockey Helps the Homeless charity tournament, presented by BMO on November 23rd at UBC with a fundraising goal of $300,000.  For more information please visit www.hockeyhelpsthehomeless.com
