I’d like to share with you a story of something I experienced recently. While I was riding the SkyTrain on my way home from work one evening, a friendly young man struck up a conversation with me. This does not happen very often as most people have headphones on or are reading and do not like to be disturbed. On this particular day I happened to forget my MP3 player at home so I was sitting there staring out the window. We started talking about the weather and how it was nice that summer finally arrived in Vancouver, and then he asked me what I do for a living.
I told him that I work at Covenant House Vancouver in the fundraising department. By the look on his face, I could tell that he had not heard of it. As I’m explaining to him what we do, the lady sitting in front of me turns around and says “Sorry for interrupting, but I couldn’t help but overhear you talking about Covenant House. My nephew was on the streets a few years ago and if it weren’t for Covenant House I doubt he would still be alive. You guys really helped him. Thank you so much!”
It was my first time experiencing something like that out in the community and it made my heart swell with pride. It was great to hear a perfect stranger tell me how much they appreciate what we do here at Covenant House. Thank you for making it possible for us to provide these services to our youth!
