Do You Need Help?

If you are living on the streets, or if you think you are at risk, we want you to know that there are people at Covenant House Vancouver who want to help.

You are not alone. Call Covenant House Vancouver toll-free: 1-877-685-7474

We help young people who have:

  • run from physical and sexual abuse and neglect
  • been kicked out by their parents or caregivers
  • aged out of the foster care system
  • been lured to the streets by sexual predators, drug dealers or even friends

Whatever got you to the place you are at now, we can help. We don't judge.

If you aren't living on the streets but are thinking of running away, please call us for help.

Living on the streets is the worst kind of survival.

  • Unless you have a lot of money, you may be forced to sleep in doorways, behind dumpsters, on the beach or in a park.
  • Stealing and theft is common, and your belongings may be taken while you try to sleep.
  • Unless you have all of your ID (birth certificate, SIN, photo ID), you won't be able to get Income Assistance (IA) and, even with ID, it is hard to apply without help.
  • You'll be vulnerable to violence, disease and mental health issues.
  • You'll be vulnerable to sexual predators who will offer you a place to stay and/or drugs, then force you to work off your debt in the sex trade or with illegal activity.
  • You'll find it difficult to find a job, especially if you have not finished high school, and, without a home, you'll have nowhere to get ready for work.
  • You'll be tempted to use drugs, some of which are extremely addictive and life-threatening. Avoid the use of crystal meth.

However, living in an abusive and unsafe place is not acceptable either. If you can't stay where you are, answer these questions:

  • Do you have a relative, teacher or someone else you trust who could help you find a safe place to live and money to support yourself?
  • Do you know where your local safe house or crisis shelters are?
  • Do you know about any Community Resources that are available to you?
  • Have you called us?

If you are in trouble, tell someone you trust or call Covenant House at 604-685-5437 or toll-free at 1-877-685-7474.

Jennifer had borne the brunt of her father's rage since she was three. Having been physically and verbally abused for years, Jennifer tried to commit suicide twice before her 17th birthday. Ready to run to the streets, Jennifer finally told her best friend about her abuse. Together, they went to their school guidance counsellor. Through the efforts of the guidance counsellor and a social worker, Jennifer was referred to Covenant House. She stayed with us for three months. We helped keep life stable so she could graduate from high school, and, ultimately, we helped her to find a safe place where she could start her new life.
