KOOZA: Beyond words but I’ll try

Last night I had the privilege of seeing Cirque du Soleil's new show Kooza, and it was spectacular. Not just spectacular, but breathtaking, amazing, magical, thrilling, funny, and exciting and every other positive adjective you can think of.

We at Covenant House Vancouver are so lucky that Cirque du Soleil has chosen to support us again this year. All the proceeds from the tickets we sell will come directly to Covenant House Vancouver and our young people. Cirque du Soleil also donates tickets so our youth can attend the show. Some of our youth were sitting behind me and they were so excited and were in awe of the performances.

Here are what a few of our young people had to say:

"I thought I had seen all there is to see, but after that show I felt that my mind had been blown away"

We do have a few tickets remaining but they are selling quickly. So please get your tickets today as you will not only see a fantastic show but also be supporting our young people as well.

Cirque du Soleil's benefit night for Covenant House is on Friday, August 6th, 2010.

The Big Picture Presents: INCEPTION

Watch a great movie and see "The Big Picture" by contributing to the community at the same time! The Big Picture is a movie fundraiser featuring the film Inception and organized by youth volunteers of S.U.C.C.E.S.S.'s Youth Leadership Millennium (YLM) Program. Proceeds from the event will benefit Vancouver's Covenant House, a local charity that has been providing 24-hour shelter, drug, alcohol and mental health counselling, as well as many other areas of support for homeless youths, a group estimated to number 15,000 per year in British Columbia.

Bocci is a contemporary design and manufacturing house that is hosting it's first warehouse sale. Bocci will be donating 50% of all the proceeds to Covenant House Vancouver.

The sale is taking place on Friday, March 26th 10am-6pm and Saturday, March 27th 10am-2pm.

Change for Change

A few weeks ago, Aaron Hutchinson came down to Covenant House with an idea. He told me about how he felt when he saw a young person on the street asking for money. The thought of young Vancouverites in such troubled situations moved Aaron into action and he started thinking about what he could do to help them on a larger scale.

He toured our Drake & Seymour Street location and asked a lot of questions about our programs and services for young people up to 25 years of age. Aaron wanted to try to help them make positive changes in their lives and saw Covenant House as an organization that could help make that happen. And so, Aaron embarked on his ‘Change for Change' initiative.

He has involved 18 restaurants in the downtown core, dozens of friends, and Juno nominated band Marianas Trench. The goal: collect as much spare change as they possibly can (the group is aiming for 6000 pounds of the stuff!), and put it all together to make a larger impact. The ‘Change for Change' buckets around the city are filling up quickly and on February 7 the fundraiser will conclude with a weigh in party at Ginger 62 where all proceeds will go to Covenant House Vancouver.

Hollyburn Properties has been a huge supporter of Covenant House for many years.

Earlier in the year, Hollyburn and Covenant House agreed to partner in a new and exciting way. Hollyburn agreed to provide a completely furnished suite in one of their buildings and Covenant House agreed to find and support a young person who could make the most of this "hand up".

After and extensive interview process, Covenant House selected a young person who is now currently living in one of Hollyburn's buildings, while still being supported by the staff and resources that we provide.

The young person selected for the apartment is doing well, but one of the side effects of the stability and safety provided by the new home is the resurgence of past trauma and conflict. It wasn't until he was able to be on his own, in a secure environment that this young person allowed himself the opportunity to actually begin the healing process.

This is a common occurence amongst our young people; we see it often at ROP. Once the stress of living on the streets is removed, a young person is freed up somewhat, and the past comes calling. A crucial part of the plan with Hollyburn is the after-support the young person is provided by our housing and youth workers.

We would like to thank Hollyburn for providing this youth with a home and thank them also for encouraging their tenants to support Covenant House over the holidays with special Christmas clothing drives.

TD Waterhouse Private Investment Advice to host Gala for second year

This gala event will kick-off or "30 days for 30 nights" campaign which aims to raise enough money to cover the cost of running our shelter for the entire month of December; this year's goal is $279,000.

You will enjoy cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, amazing silent and live auction items and fabulous raffle prizes. Last year this event raised over $80,000 to help cover the day-to-day operations of our 54 bed crisis shelter for our busiest month of the year.

The Domino Effect Fundraiser for Covenant House

The Domino Effect "If one falls we all fall," a black and white themed fundraiser, is aimed at celebrating local and international organizations that have helped youth off the streets and out of poverty. It's a time for our community to come together and celebrate those that spend day after day helping young people out of the cycle of poverty.

There will be prizes, games, an acoustic performance and DJ's to get the party going!

Tickets - $16 will get you a Granville Island beer, a chance to win some prizes, appies and entertainment throughout the evening!
