Is the end of homelessness near?

Will Vancouver end homelessness by 2015? This is the question that has been in the media and on a lot of people’s minds lately. The mayor’s office has stated that we are just 450 housing units away from ending street homelessness.

People’s definitions of homelessness vary, and for me, homelessness is not just a housing issue. Although I commend the mayor for setting up more shelters and creating more affordable housing, I think that Vancouver needs to create more support services including: prevention at an early age, mental health programs, drug and alcohol treatment centres and life skills training. I truly hope that one day Vancouver is a city without homelessness but I think we still have some work to do.
