Opening a Door to a New Path

We recently had a young lady in house, whom we first met in the summer of 2010. She came to us from a small town, and had a history of trauma, abuse, drug use, and mental health concerns.  When we first met her, she was slow to trust and resistant to many types of support.  She was binge drinking, very under weight, and not yet ready to engage in the counseling she very much needed.

For the past few months, none of our efforts to help her become meaningfully engaged in employment or housing seemed to come to fruition.  This seemed to lead to this young woman feeling defeated and significantly impacted her feeling of self worth.  Despite her challenges and multiple experiences with rejection, she persevered and did not give up.  Her resiliency, persistent nature, and desire to make a better life for herself recently paid off, and she was accepted into the Skills Link Program today.

This job training program is a part of her journey to a better life.  This opportunity will not only allow her to develop the skills she needs to pursue meaningful employment, but it is also key in developing the self esteem and motivation she needs to carry on, despite all of her personal challenges.  This is by no means the end of her journey, but it has opened the door to a new path, a path in which Covenant House will continue to walk along side her.  It makes me very happy to see the new found glimmer of hope in her eyes.
