The True Spirit of Young People in Our City

With all of the negative attention on teenagers this past week, it is encouraging to remember that there are young people out there doing good for their communities. Last Friday I received a phone call from a lady asking if her and her 15 year old son could come down to make a donation. She explained to me that her son wished to give a portion of his earnings to the kids here at Covenant House.

When they arrived I was introduced to Gig Morton, a 15 year old whose enthusiasm and kindness were contagious. As we began talking, I learned that Gig is an actor, currently starring as Derby, in the YTV series, Mr. Young. (It airs on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 6:30pm and Sundays at 8:30pm.) Originally from Comox, BC, Gig will begin filming the second season of the show in a few weeks. He wanted to give back to the community he is calling home right now, and youth homelessness was a cause that spoke to him. As he handed me the very large donation from his own earnings, I was blown away. Here is the true spirit of young people in our city. Through the generosity and kindness of this young man, other less fortunate peers of his have been given the gift of hope. Truly inspiring!

Thanks Gig!
