Open discussions help get Damien on the right path

“Damien” came to us after being in a treatment program for addiction. He had struggled with addiction for a long time but was very open about his challenges. As time went on we got to know him in the Shelter and he became very much liked by everyone as he was such a nice guy with a genuine big, bright smile. He attended support meetings and was working hard at managing his addictions and staying sober. Damien shared some of his writing with us including poetry and short stories. He truly had a great gift for writing and a great understanding of himself on a very deep level.

But his addictions and depression got the better of him and he relapsed. After discussions and open conversations Damien and staff agreed going back into treatment is what needed to happen. Damien and staff called Detox where he was able to get a bed and his plan was to return to a treatment program after detoxing.

Maybe a couple of months had passed when I was sitting in the office and heard an unmistakable laugh come from the front lobby. Damien had come by to say hello and let us know he was currently still at the treatment centre and was doing well.
