Richard is grateful to be in a safe place that is free from abuse

Richard was 19 years old when he came to Canada under a sponsorship program. Richard grew up under the care of his grandparents in Asia during the time that his mother was away. In Canada he lived in a very unstable home where his mother and his stepfather constantly fought. His stepfather was a drug addict and both he and his mother were physically abused especially when the stepfather was under the influence.

The situation got worse when Richard’s mother and younger sister decided to leave his stepfather and move to another province to stay with a friend and start a new life. His stepfather became more violent towards him. The tension between Richard and his stepfather grew and with the ongoing abuse, Richard felt that he had no choice but to leave the house. With no relatives, no identification, money or way to support himself, Richard survived by staying with friends and classmates.

Richard thought he would be homeless forever until one day a receptionist at a drop-in center in Vancouver told him about Covenant House Vancouver. The receptionist explained to Richard that Covenant House provides homeless young people with shelter, guidance and help with immediate needs. So Richard came straight to our Crisis Program and felt instantly welcomed.

Richard was very happy, he was also thankful that he found a safe place free of abuse where he received guidance and encouragement from the staff. With the new confidence he has gained, he plans to continue his education and finish high school. Richard may have had a rough start but he is now volunteering and attending job skills training that are helping shape his future career ambitions.

We wish Richard all the very best for the future!
