Our 6th Annual Sleep Out: Executive Edition raises over $896,404!

Last night, 62 local executives, community leaders and celebrities slept outside in solidarity with the hundreds of young people who call Vancouver’s streets home, to raise funds for Covenant House Vancouver’s Crisis ProgramTodd Talbot (Love it or List it Vancouver) slept out and was joined by Carl Valentine (Vancouver Whitecaps FC), Riaz Meghji (Breakfast Television) and Kaitlyn Herbst (Global BC Morning), enduring a cold and wet night.  At last count, over $896,404 has been raised!

The evening began with the participants getting to know each other and touring our female Crisis Program and Drop-In Centre.  Three Covenant House youth participated in a panel discussion, sharing their stories and the circumstances that led to their homelessness. One young man said “I have been my own worst enemy and the support and structure at Covenant House has helped keep me on track. Here you are not alone and you have people to talk to”.
It was a cold and wet night.  Most people didn’t get much sleep.  In the morning, the participants took part in a group reflection exercise, describing what the experience meant to them.  The Sleepers acknowledged that sleeping outside for one night does not compare to what it is really like for youth who must do so night after night, some while holding down a job and going to school.  Participants did however, get a glimpse into experiencing the cold, feeling exposed and vulnerable out in the open.
Words cannot express our gratitude to all of our Sleepers and their supporters! There is still time to donate to the Sleep Out: Executive Edition.  Click to donate to the event or to a specific sleeper.
