Sleeping Out – Family Style

The Sleep Out movement has such a tremendous impact. Not only on the lives of the youth who we serve, but also on the individual fundraisers who participate in sleeping out in solidarity and raising awareness.

We’ve reached another milestone in this movement, with three immediate family members participating in three different Sleep Out Editions this past year.

Last year, Danielle Allan led a team of her colleagues to participate in the Young Professionals Edition, raising over $25,000 in the process. Her team spoke about the experience in this short video.

Then this spring, her mother Suzanne committed to the Mothers Edition, something that she had been wanting to do for years. Rounding out the trifecta, her father Ross participated in the Executive Edition this November. He also shared his thoughts the morning after here.

As a family business in the neighbourhood for almost 25 years, Allan Financial has a history of giving back in innovative ways. Four years ago they started a social enterprise campaign in partnership with Kiva, a micro-finance platform that loans money to low-income entrepreneurs all over the world. They pitched hundreds of their clients, partners and friends to lend alongside them. To date, they have seeded over $500,000 of microloans, often in $25 increments, to female entrepreneurs around the world.

For this family, giving has been a transformative process that shakes things up, injects passion and purpose into their workplace, and that has transformed their understanding of how corporate social responsibility can function in a small-business context.

This dynamic team has now turned their sights on Covenant House Vancouver and has so far raised more than $40,000 for youth in need. We are beyond grateful for their incredible effort.
