Development Officer, Individual Giving



Covenant House Vancouver is the premier provider of residential and support services for our city’s homeless youth, and we are growing! You will be joining a team of dedicated and committed people whose mission is to help at-risk young people move off the streets and on to independence.

The Development Officer, Individual Giving, builds relationships with 150+ donors to engage them in the work of Covenant House Vancouver (CHV)asks for monetary donations to support our cause, and helps tell our story to demonstrate the impact of how donors are making a difference in the lives of youth who choose CHV for support. This role is an 8 month maternity leave contract position with a preferred start date of as soon as possible. For the safety of the youth and staff at CHV during the COVID-19 pandemic, most of your work will be done remotely.   

 

Responsibilities and Duties 

Working independently and as part of a team: 

  • You will build meaningful relationships with an existing portfolio of donors and ask thoughtful questions to understand their interestspassions, and reasons for supporting the youth at CHV 
  • You will communicate with donors through in-person meetings (if circumstances allow), virtual meetingsphone calls, and written avenues including mail and email  
  • You will ask supporters for donations of $1,000 to $50,000 to meet the fundraising goal of your portfolio  
  • You will work closely with the Prospect Development (research) team to learn more about your donors and plan how to best connect with them  
  • You will create tailored requests for support (including written proposals) for key major donors/prospective donors based on giving history, donor interests, and information gathered through research and personal contact 
  • You will learn about youth stories and updates to CHV’s programs and share them with donors, including the impact that their donations had in the lives of youth experiencing homelessness  
  • You will invite supporters to participate in events including donor engagement gatherings, gratitude events, Sleep Out events, and other fundraising events  
  • You will support and/or lead projects and working groups to contribute to the Development & Communication team’s overall goals
  • You will perform administrative tasks including data entry into our database (Raiser’s Edge) and answering the general donations phoneline in a warm and helpful manner to assist donors with their requests and concerns 
  • Other duties as required  

Requirements

  • Outstanding relationship building skills 
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills; both written and verbal
  • Strong organization and time management skills   
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a supportive team environment and independently  
  • Big picture thinker with attention to detail 
  • Ability to meet deadlines 
  • One to two years of related experience

Preferred Skills & Experience   

  • Microsoft Office including Outlook, Excel, and Word 
  • Knowledge of Vancouver’s homelessness issues
  • College, University, or professional certificate degree 
  • Raiser’s Edge database software  
  • Experience working for a non-profit and/or in an office environment  
  • An interest in philanthropy and learning new skills

 

Our Ideal Candidate  

The ideal candidate has shared values with CHV and enjoys working with diverse donors to connect them with the causes they care about. You enjoy leading the direction of your own work based on guidance from your manager and teammates. You can work independently and as part of team. You are keen to receive donor strategy advice from team members and to take the initiative to move forward with suggested actions (ex. phone call introductions, invitations to attend events, asking donors to discuss their future donations, thanking donors for their support guided by the size and scope of their investment.). You want to make a difference to help youth who are experiencing homelessness and care about the success of your teammates and the organization.  

 

Support for Working Remotely  

CHV will provide the successful candidate with a Microsoft Surface laptop and other technology to ensure you can successfully work from home.  

Initial training will be conducted onsite at 1302 Seymour Street, Vancouver BC, with all staff following the safety protocols outlined by CHV’s COVID-19 Response Team, including always wearing a mask indoors and frequent hand washing.
