Volunteer Services Assistant (1 Year Contract)

Covenant House Vancouver is the premier provider of residential and support services for our city’s homeless youth, and we are growing! You will be joining a team of dedicated and committed individuals whose mission is to help at-risk young people move off the streets and on to independence.


Responsible for assisting the Manager, Volunteers Services and Gifts in Kind, in all administrative and operational aspects of the Volunteer Program, as well as with staff and volunteer giving. Also responsible for maintaining and continually improving administrative systems in the Development Department.

Brief Description

Volunteer Services Department (80%)

  • Respond to volunteer inquires in a timely manner
  • Send out volunteer packages
  • Update volunteer department materials as needed
  • Assist with events, i.e. Vancouver Whitecaps and Volunteer Appreciation Week
  • Assist with recruitment and operations of the Thank-a-Thon program
  • Prepare volunteer files for interview process
  • Prepare volunteer packages for new volunteers
  • Set up and provided volunteer id badges
  • Maintain the volunteer department Raiser Edge database
  • Ensure and supervise all volunteers criminal record check and volunteer training are up to date
  • Assist with volunteer workshops
  • Acts as backup when Coordinator is away
  • Maintains list of current volunteer positions
  • Updates volunteer schedule
  • Assist with volunteer orientation

Activity B: Gifts in Kind (GIK) (10%)

  • Assist with gift-in-kind during the busy Christmas season (e.g. help supervise groups of volunteers with sorting and lifting donations might be required approx. 20lbs)
  • Assist with scheduling volunteers for backpack program
  • Acts as backpack with Gift donation if GIK team is away

Activity C: Development and Communications Department (10%)

  • Assist with bi-weekly Staff 50/50 Draws
  • Manage and Coordinate office supplies and order as needed (i.e. paper, envelops and general supplies)
  • Maintain incoming and outgoing mail and general voicemail for the development department


  • Project work as directed
  • Other duties as assigned   


  • Diploma/degree in Volunteer Management or Grade 12 and working toward diploma/degree in Volunteer Management or combination of relevant education and experience. 
  • Proficient with Word, Excel, Outlook and Power point
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge Volunteer module preferred
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to effectively manage time and prioritize tasks
  • Good interpersonal skills and positive attitude
  • Detail oriented to ensure tasks are accurately completed
  • Sound judgement and ability to maintain confidentiality
