Youth Worker – Overnight Shifts (Full Time)

Covenant House Vancouver is the premier provider of residential and support services for our city’s homeless youth, and we are growing! You will be joining a team of dedicated and committed  individuals whose mission is to help at-risk young people move off the streets and on to independence.

The Youth Worker is responsible for the direct implementation of Covenant House Vancouver’s philosophy, policies and principles as they pertain to client care and safety to all.  The Youth worker’s primary role is to build therapeutic professional relationships with youth. Youth Workers will collaborate with other agency staff to determine the best plan of care to help youth reach their goals and transition to healthy, confident adults.

Job Description

Direct Service to Youth

  • Ensure adherence to and role model Covenant House principles and core values
  • Greet and welcome youth accessing CHV services, assess and respond to their immediate needs, and provide them with practical resources including food, clothing, transportation, etc
  • Initiate, develop and maintain relationships with at risk youth 16-24 years of age
  • Upon entry to the Program, introduce the services provided, orient new youth, complete program intake/admission
  • Work collaboratively with other staff to assist youth in identifying attainable short and long-term goals, strategies for meeting these goals, and an action plan for implementation
  • Support youth with daily routines in a structured environment
  • Assist youth with accessing external community supports and accompany them if needed
  • Coordinate youth meetings and activities, including recreation and life skills
  • Respond to any potential behavioral, mental health, emotional, or substance use concerns, by using supportive relationships and following strategies outlined in staff training or documentation in youth files.
  • Respond to any emergency situations that may arise, by implementing procedures outlined in various staff training, including Emergency response training (fire, etc), First Aid, Managing Hostile Interactions, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, etc.

Case Management, Documentation and Other Duties

  • Manage youth case files, including all relevant reporting and documentation
  • Read and review all pertinent information and communication (i.e. Incident reports, communications logs, policies, procedures, emails, etc)
  • Attend all training as directed by your manager
  • Train and mentor new staff
  • Maintain the cleanliness and safety of the program areas – both staff and youth
  • Clean, search, and remake resident rooms at discharge
  • Laundry as needed
  • Front Desk and reception duties as required
  • Meet operational needs as required and ensure the safety of building and occupants, including fire, safety, and emergency procedures
  • Participate in CHV committees as assigned
  • Other duties as required

 Job Requirements

  • Diploma or degree in related social service
  • Minimum of 2 years related experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Non-violent crisis intervention / managing hostile interactions certificate a strong asset
  • Valid first aid certificate
  • Familiar with runaway and street involved youth issues
  • Leadership and team building
  • Basic computer skills

Schedule We have two positions available, Sat – Mon, every other Tuesday and Wednesday to Friday and every other Tuesday
