Drop-In

Young people drop in for lots of reasons. Some want a meal. Some want to find a way home. Some need help to apply for a birth certificate or social insurance number so they can get government assistance or a job. All of them need a sanctuary, love and a chance.

At Covenant House's Drop-In, Youth Workers provide an array of "as-needed" services to street youth aged 16 to 24.

Kids who have lived on the street a long time or who have had their hearts broken by people in authority are often resistent to structured support programs, or even to using the shelter at all. It takes an enormous shift for them to come inside. Drop-In is where they can test the Daily Drop in for homeless street youthwaters and see if they feel safe coming to us for help.

We build trust by responding to one basic need, and then another, as they ask for it. We take a "let's see what we can do" approach rather than saying, "We don't do that here." And whatever their reason for coming in, at Covenant House they will always find compassion, acceptance and love.

At Drop-In, youth can get:

  • Access to a Youth Worker for support, counselling and personal planning
  • Access to an in-house addictions counsellor and programs focused on support and recovery
  • Access to mental health clinicians and psychiatrists
  • Referrals to other social services, including medical professionals, addictions specialists (including detox), mental health counsellors and emergency shelter
  • Help with finding employment and referrals to job centres and training programs
  • Help with repatriation or family reunification
  • Recreational opportunities, including soccer, hockey, basketball and baseball
  • Light snacks (muffins, juice and coffee)

Just one of the ways we've been able to help

One evening during our weekly hot meal, a young couple came in. They were infested with body lice from living on the streets. We immediately offered the kids a hot shower and some clean clothes.

While they were showering, our Youth Worker called the local pharmacy and got some medication to kill the lice. Freshly showered and clothed, they stayed for a nutritious, hot mealclearly the first they'd had in a while.

The young girl was so upset and frightened. We sat with them both and comforted her; she didn't want to sit too close because of the lice, but we showed them how to use the medication, held her hand and showed her that we weren't afraid to help her.

That first introduction helped the couple know that we would help, without judgment. Over time, they came back and sought more help.

Step by step, meeting one need at a time, we build trust with street youth who have given up trusting. It can be a slow and patient process, but the result changes our world, one young person at a time.
