Volunteering at Covenant House
Help us Help Street Youth
- Volunteers support the youth and staff at Covenant House in so many ways. They staff our clothing room, help in our kitchens, serve hot meals, sort clothing donations, thank our donors, provide administrative assistance, take our youth on recreational outings and help with special events. They are often the first friendly face that a young person sees at our reception desk.
- Volunteers share their skills, passion and experience with us and their presence sends our youth the powerful message that they are worth somebody's time.
- Last year, 180 volunteers donated 9758 hours of their time to Covenant House! If you are interested in joining this dynamic team please read on.

WHAT OUR VOLUNTEERS SAY...

Volunteering at Covenant House has been a heart-warming and rewarding experience, and I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to work with the youth and the staff. Covenant House has always been welcoming and I feel my volunteer hours are truly appreciated there. Working with the youth has made me realise that these are just kids that need to feel loved and that they have somewhere to belong without being judged or criticized. I would encourage anyone who is interested in volunteer work in the community to consider Covenant House; it is full of such caring and dedicated individuals who offer these children a comfortable environment which is safe and off of the streets. It is the old adage that you will get back more than you put in to it. It is very fulfilling and has more than met my expectation.

In 2000 our family moved back to the city after having spent 12 years raising our 4 children on one of the Gulf Islands. Immediately, I noticed Covenant House and wondered what they were all about, as the building on Drake sits at a very busy intersection that we were often at. At the time I was still raising the children and working full time, so didn't have any time to volunteer. Once I realized their mission however, I could hardly wait. Thank goodness when I was ready to give a part of my week, so was Covenant House, and they had the perfect position just waiting for me. Each week, I get to go into the heart of that building on Drake, where the young people and staff workers and kitchen crew all intermingle and go about their work. As I bag bread, or make sandwiches, or assist with breakfast or put away the grocery order, I feel as if I am assisting with the great work that is Covenant House. Ruth Hume, Kitchen Volunteer |
