The world’s toughest row begins today…

Jessica, Joe, Lauren, and Jess from team In Deep Ship are embarking on an extraordinary adventure today: The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge.

A team of 4 rowers in a rowing race may sound simple, but add 3000 miles, up to 50 days at sea and you quickly learn this is a huge challenge. And it can’t be underestimated how dangerous this challenge could be. In Deep Ship will come across 20 ft waves, row over sea valleys 5 miles deep, and battle against huge storms – more people have climbed Everest than completed this challenge!

Some fun facts:

  • Each team will row in excess of 1.5 million oar strokes during a race.
  • Each rower is expected to use 800 sheets of toilet paper during their crossing and there is no toilet on board – rowers use a bucket!
  • Rowers burn in excess of 5,000 calories per day and the average rower loses around 8kg during a crossing.

The team has come together to fundraise for charities they all believe in and like the team members, their charities span the globe. They aim to raise £60,000 which will be split equally between Crisis UK, Covenant House Vancouver, and Anthony Nolan. If you would like to donate click here.

Covenant House Vancouver will be following the race and will provide updates. You can follow along on Instagram and YouTube as well.

Good luck In Deep Ship – Covenant House Vancouver is cheering you on!
