The young people of today will be tomorrow’s leaders. However, some young people, through no fault of their own, find themselves without supports, a safe place to live, or access to the services needed to achieve their dreams and goals.
According to the 2023 Homeless Count in Greater Vancouver, at least 385 young people, under the age of 25, experience homelessness on any given night. Although, we know this number must be much higher, based on the limitations of this survey.
- At least 6,000 young people experience homelessness, every night
- 25%–40% of youth experiencing homelessness self-identified as 2SLGBTQAI+
- Over 50% of homeless youth indicated that abuse at home contributed to their homelessness
At Covenant House Vancouver, we’re more than just a shelter or transitional housing. We offer a person-centred approach that addresses the needs of young people whose overlapping mental health, substance use, trauma, medical health, and other challenges require coordinated and specialized support.
Youth need a space that is psychologically, emotionally, and physically safe in order for them to feel like they belong. At Covenant House Vancouver, young people have a place to call home and a community that genuinely cares for them. This means that youth are getting the care that they need when they need it.
But we can’t do this important work alone.
The Wubs Family Foundation helps bridge the gap between youth and services
“It’s vital to support youth as they are the future. Youth homelessness is a pressing issue in the Lower Mainland, and we feel a strong responsibility to act. We are honoured to support the vital work being done to provide a safe haven for vulnerable youth.” Says a spokesperson for the Foundation.
The Wubs Family Foundation, established in 2023, is dedicated to addressing the most pressing challenges that face our communities. Inspired by a commitment to create meaningful change, they focus their efforts on five key areas: food insecurity, homelessness, health and wellness, environmental sustainability, and mental health.
Their family’s deep-rooted commitment to community began in 1980, with the founding of Westland Insurance in Ladner, BC. Over the years, they have prioritized giving back to the communities where they live and work.
Aware of the work that Covenant House Vancouver does, members from the Foundation came for a tour of our facilities. “We were amazed at the thought that went into the build and design of the space. It’s wonderful to see a space so welcoming and offering so many opportunities for the youth. The art therapy room and gym are incredible!”
The Wubs Family Foundation is investing in youth
“Covenant House’s continuum of care can truly transform lives and create opportunities, which in turn, helps build a stronger, more compassionate community.” Says the Foundation’s spokesperson.
Because the Wubs Family Foundation believes so passionately about investing in youth, they have agreed to be our Double Match Campaign donors!
From April 21st to June 30th, every donation made to Covenant House Vancouver will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to $100,000. That means your donation will go twice as far in helping young people become tomorrow’s leaders.
Every dollar you give will be matched to help young people in our community access the safety, stability, and care they deserve.
To the Wubs Family Foundation, community means, “Connection, collaboration, and support — people that come together grow, thrive, and overcome challenges.”
Let’s all come together and build community, by helping today’s youth thrive.
