Housing Supports
Covenant House Vancouver understands the importance of supporting youth after they leave our care.
The goal of our Housing Supports is to help youth as they transition out of our care.
The housing market is particularly challenging for youth in Vancouver. It is one of the most expensive places to rent in Canada and so it often feels insurmountable to leave Covenant House with few prospects within a person’s budget, and beyond that, the possibility of being in a precarious housing situation again with challenging landlords or roommates.
In the Community
When moving out of CHV and into the community:
- youth are given an overview of tenant’s and landlord’s rights and responsibilities, to protect them in the competitive rental market.
- Youth are taught how to safely navigate the rental market to avoid being scammed or placed in an unsafe environment.
Partnership with Hollyburn
Currently have a partnership with Hollyburn who has provided apartments for youth to rent at a price far below market value.
This allows for youth to:
- Live in an independent space and develop their life skills.
- Learn about the rental market and how to be a good tenant.
- Learn how to support themselves.
- Still feel some connection to CHV even after leaving physically.
We are actively seeking other opportunities for our young people as they transition from CHV.
