Rights of Passage

Rights of Passage

Rights of Passage (ROP) provides youth (age 16–24) with safe, transitional housing, along with guidance, structure, and support, to develop life skills, while they prepare to eventually move to the community.

Every youth in the program can create a unique plan to help them build the skills needed for the next step of their journey.

Community building, resiliency, and relationships are prioritized, to help create a supportive and engaging environment. This could involve leading or participating in various committees, to help youth foster a deeper sense of belonging among their peers. We have committees dedicated to gardening, cultural celebrations, and recreational activities.

INDIVIDUAL SUPPORT

  • Goal setting and action plans with a social worker.
  • Life skills support, such as time management, budgeting, and cooking.
  • Support to help maintain employment and/or to develop an education plan.
  • Housing transition planning.

RESIDENTIAL SUPPORT

  • A fully furnished, private apartment, with a shared kitchen and common spaces.
  • 24-hour staff that includes youth workers, social workers, mentors, and a life skills coordinator.
  • Daily dinners, and basic groceries.
  • Recreational and wellness opportunities.

Entering the Program
Youth are referred by a social worker or by community partners. Youth are asked to commit to at least one year in residence, while advancing their personal goals. If you are a young person interested in the Rights of Passage program, please contact penderchvreferrals@covenanthousebc.org, for more information and how to apply.

Exiting the Program
Once a youth is ready to move on from ROP, they can still access support through ROP’s dedicated community transition coordinator and their social worker. Staff follow up with youth who have moved out at the regular intervals of three, six, nine, and 12 months, to keep them connected to the community that they helped build.
