Ways to Get Involved

Sleep Out: Student Edition

Sleep Out is a great way to show secondary students a glimpse of what life would be like if they experienced homelessness, by sleeping for one night without the comforts of home.
Host a Sleep Out and we’ll provide you with a personalized online fundraising page, a virtual presentation about Covenant House Vancouver programs, an event planning guide, and ongoing support.

Students who participate will also receive 12 hours of community service which can be applied to their graduation requirements.

Casual/Pajama Day

Choose a date to host your Casual/Pajama Day and we’ll supply stickers and posters. We can give a virtual presentation about the programs Covenant House Vancouver offers and create an online fundraising page so that school communities can donate virtually.

On the day of the event, students can wear their stickers and dress casual to show their support for homeless youth.

School Events

Student Spotlight

  • Chloe Yang

Chloe, a secondary student at Collingwood School, is supporting Covenant House Vancouver by creating a mindfulness journal for youth. After participating in a “Let’s Talk” workshop, Chloe discovered how complex adolescent mental health is and wanted to create a tool to help them, which led to her designing a mindfulness journal. She did a lot of research and ended up with four key pillars that informed design: deep reflection, mindfulness exercise, quotes for introspection, and mood tracking. She also has organized hands-on journal workshops at the Lynn Valley Library, where she had heard directly from youth how this has given them a space to reflect on themselves.

“I hope to leave youth with mental hope and support, contributing to the organization’s existing mental health programming. […] Supporting CHV reflects my core values: CHV’s unconditional love and respect empower youth towards wellbeing, just as my journal’s prompts do.”

  • UBC Med Gala

UBC Since 1995, the UBC Medicine Spring Gala has been a celebration of the arts, where medical students come together to showcase talents beyond the medical realm culminating in a night of performances, artistry, and celebration. All proceeds from Gala ticket sales and the silent auction are donated to a local charity, with Covenant House Vancouver (CHV) being selected in 2025.

The planning team were inspired by our mission to serve all youth with relentless support, absolute respect, and unconditional love.   “As future healthcare providers, we believe that all youth — regardless of life experience or identity — deserve a safe haven from the hardships of homelessness.” – Planning Committee for UBC Med Gala

  • Island Pacific School

Jen Henrichsen’s Grade 9 students from Island Pacific School participate in Sleep Out: Students Edition every year as a part of their curriculum. Lunch is their last meal of the day, they come to CHV via public transport, do some volunteering, then spend some time in the DTES, where Jen gives them $2 to try to find their next meal. In the evening, they then head back to Bowen, where they sleep outside for the night, and have morning reflections the next day.   “The values of our school are wisdom, courage and integrity. […] The mission of Covenant House fits with our school’s values. It also required our students to have the courage to walk in someone else’s shoes, integrity to be aware and open-minded, and the wisdom to be educated in social issues of our wider community.” – Jen Henrichsen
