We held a pride-themed art-making day for youth in our brand new art therapy studio!

Last Saturday, Covenant House Vancouver hosted a day of Pride-themed art-making for youth in our brand new and purpose-designed art therapy studio. The day was facilitated by social worker Michelle, art therapist Keith, and former art therapy practicum student Erin, with 15 youth attending.

Whilst the intention for the day was to make art, decorations, and costumes for youth taking part in the Pride Parade on July 31st, what stood out for the staff was the sense of 2SLGBTQAI+ community that emerged, the excitement of the youth for whom this will be their first Pride event, the challenges some trans and non-binary people experience in being seen (even at Pride events), and the issues specific to youth who are both two-spirit/queer and Indigenous. The open sharing and loving support were really central to the day. The amount of glitter and feathers left on the floor at the end also spoke to the joy and creativity that was expressed by all who attended.

This will be the first time Covenant House Vancouver has taken part in the Pride Parade, so please give us a big cheer if you’re there. We will also have a stall at the Pride in the Park festival at the end of the Parade at Sunset Beach.
