Education is powerful. Not only does education equip individuals with the knowledge and skills to improve their lives, but as we look to the future, it’s clear that education also positively benefits society as a whole.
In Canada, literacy rates are among the highest in the world and completing high school and pursuing some form of post-secondary education is increasingly becoming the norm. However, for many homeless youth, the path to pursue education is fraught with obstacles and studies reveal that between 60%–90% of homeless youth haven’t completed secondary school.
Homeless youth often face a myriad of challenges that can disrupt their education. Without the necessary supports and resources, it becomes increasingly difficult to focus on academics, keep up with schoolwork, or even attend school on a consistent basis. The stress and uncertainty of daily life creates an environment where education cannot be the main focus.
At Covenant House Vancouver (CHV), we recognize the power that education holds in transforming lives and inspiring youth. As classes resume and students of all ages hit the books, we’re turning to our community once again to help us help youth succeed. The gift of school supplies and other necessities does more than enable youth to go to school—it’s a gift of hope, confidence, inspiration, and opportunity.
Education can be a lifeline for youth that offers a pathway towards positive change and stability. It extends beyond the classroom walls and fosters critical thinking, nurtures creativity, and empowers individuals to make informed decisions. Every young person deserves the chance to succeed in school, and with your help, we can ensure that homeless youth are not left behind. By providing access to the resources and supports that they need to succeed in school, we are investing not only in their individual futures, but in the future of our community at large.
