Volunteering is inspiring, and no matter how young you are it is never too early to start changing the world. YouthToSea volunteers are the perfect example of this, through grant funding from Ocean Wise, YouthToSea volunteers were able to create care packages for the youth at Covenant House Vancouver.
YouthToSea is designed to give a voice to youth in discussions about ocean conservation and sustainability. Young people gain valuable work experience, service hours, and mentorship in leadership and education through a work placement with the AquaCamps program at the Vancouver Aquarium.
YouthToSea’s goal was to support youth who are experiencing homelessness during the pandemic, in the most sustainable way possible. The group came up with the idea for environmentally friendly care packages. Each care packages included a tote bag containing cozy socks, a reusable water bottle, healthy snacks, sustainable hygiene products (including a bamboo toothbrush, natural toothpaste, beeswax lip balm), and a wellness kit with hand sanitizer, vegan bar soap, and reusable face masks. The youth volunteers also designed and created handwritten greeting cards to go in each pack.
Volunteerism is one of the most selfless acts, and witnessing these young people give back both environmentally and in the social service sector is truly inspiring. Thank you so much, YouthToSea volunteers, for doing so much to make our community a better place for all!
