The Impactful Gesture: The Importance of Gift-in-Kind Items for Youth at CHV

We are very grateful to our community for Gifts-in-Kind (GIK) items and are experiencing a major need for things like clothing, hygiene supplies, and household items. These items help us keep costs down and can have a profound impact in helping to directly support young people.

Keep CHV youth in mind when you’re out shopping or if you’re cleaning out your closet. We’re happy to receive new and gently-used items. If you want to help young people experiencing homelessness here are our top needed items:

  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Hats
  • Reusable water bottles
  • Water or Gatorade
  • Energy bars
  • Electric and hand fans
  • Shoes (all genders)
  • Cellphones (used and in working condition is great)
  • Phone charging cords/blocks

All items can be dropped off at our 1280 Seymour Street building at the front desk.

Meeting Their Basic Needs
The experience of being homeless or precariously housed can be incredibly challenging, especially for young individuals who lack stable support systems. Having items that youth can “shop” for in our Clothing Room can make a significant difference in the lives of young people. Not only does it help address their immediate needs, having access to these items can make an enormous difference in their daily lives, by restoring their sense of self worth and dignity

Building Trust and Connection
Acts of kindness, including gift-in-kind donations, can foster a sense of trust and connection between homeless youth and the broader community. By offering support and compassion, we help bridge the gap between these young individuals and the rest of society. This connection can be instrumental in encouraging them to seek further assistance, engage in programs, and develop relationships that can positively impact their lives.

Raising Awareness and Advocacy
Your gift-in-kind donations also contribute to raising awareness about the challenges faced by homeless youth. When individuals and organizations participate in gift drives or donate items, it generates conversations and attention to the issue of youth homelessness. This increased awareness can lead to further advocacy efforts, policy changes, and community support, ultimately creating a more supportive environment for homeless youth

This seemingly small gesture of donating items can have the power to restore hope, ignite dreams, and provide a stepping stone toward a better future. By recognizing the significance of gift-in-kind donations, we can collectively make a positive impact on the lives of homeless youth, reminding them that they are seen, valued, and deserving of a brighter tomorrow.
